One Week Later

A week later and everything is going great! I’ve made new friends, tasted some new food, and learned so much about Vietnam and their culture. The Vietnamese have a very caring and giving culture, especially when it comes to food. One thing I learned through talking with different natives is to be aware of your gestures. For example, they might not understand when you’re done eating and you’ll end up with twice as much as you started with. I learned the Vietnamese word for “full” a couple days ago, so that definitely has come in handy.

This is an example of one of the meals we had for lunch one day…eel. It actually wasn’t that bad.

Besides the food, the volunteers in Vietnam and the other students I’m with are great too. Here’s a picture of the whole group when we went exploring yesterday.

Here We Go

I’m nervous and excited! This will be my first trip out of the country in quite a while. I have been on a cruise once before and have traveled to the Bahamas for a wedding, but this is definitely out of my comfort zone. And that’s a good thing. This experience will provide me with a new perspective on life and hopefully a greater appreciation for the things  that I have here in the U.S.

Just some information about me..

My name’s Heather Bolick and I am a senior at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville majoring in Marketing and minoring in Supply Chain. Born and raised in Little Rock, AR I always planned to move up to Fayetteville and complete my undergrad at that University.

I am very fortunate to be able to travel to Vietnam during this January Intersession and learn about its culture and much more. Without financial help from the U of A through the Walton College Global Engagement Office Scholarship this adventure would not be possible. I received a $2,000 scholarship which covered a pretty large chunk from the $5,400 total. Throughout this experience my goal is to embrace myself in the unknown and to open my eyes to new adventures half way around the world.

I leave tomorrow, wish me luck!
